Dr. Vivek Datta completed MBBS from Calcutta National Medical College, University of Calcutta in May 1986. Then he went to Ireland for post graduate education & training. He had his post graduate higher surgical training from Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin, Ireland (University College, Dublin) & Cork Regional Hospital, Ireland. He obtained DO from Royal College of Surgeons Ireland in September 1990 & MRCOphth from Royal College of Ophthalmologists, London in October 1990. Thereafter he was awarded FRCS in Ophthalmology from Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in September 1993. He was nominated as Overseas Retina Fellow under University College Dublin in 1994, to acquire specialized training in medical and surgical retina. He also received training at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.
He is a competent Ophthalmologist with special interest in Vitreoretinal Surgery for the management of complicated retinal detachment, diabetic eye disease and other vitreoretinal disorders.
He has vast experience & high level of competence in Phacoemulsification, glaucoma surgery & laser procedures.
He is the Director cum Chief Eye surgeon of Probal Eye Institute, a fully equipped state of the art Eye care clinic.
He has deep interest in academic activities & has attended several academic courses, workshops & conferences at national and international levels.
Presently he holds the academic post of Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences, Kolkata. He is actively involved in post-graduate teaching & training of budding Ophthalmologists.
He presented papers based on his work at conferences organized by All India Ophthalmological Society, Vitreoretinal Society of India, Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal & Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (Indian Chapter). He was invited as a panelist and speaker at several symposia and seminars organized by AIOS, IMA & other academic organizations. He has conducted Instruction courses at AIOS. He received the awards for the best clinical paper in 2008 from Kolkata Academy of Ophthalmology & from Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal in 1997.
He is an active Rotarian and is a past President of Rotary Club of Calcutta Innercity and also served in the capacity of Chairman in the District Rotary Eye Care Committee. He was also an Executive committee member of Ophthalmological Society of West Bengal for a number of terms and also served as Editor of Bengal Ophthalmic Journal.
He has been serving as Honorary Eye Surgeon to His Excellency Governor of West Bengal since January 2004.
He has keen interest in sports particularly cricket and represented & led his School Cricket team in CAB inter school Cricket tournament. He played cricket in College too.
He has a passion for music. He is a vocalist and had formal training in Vocal music in Rabindra Sangeet, semi-classical & other forms of vocal music. He is one of the members of a musical group named “Byatikromi” formed of five eminent doctors of Kolkata. He regularly renders solo performances in musical soirees.
